Default May / June '18 Lite Challenge: Realms of the Ageless

I'm sure the backstory to this map will develop as the map does. All I know for now is that this was the cradle of all knowledge and it spread from here into the wider world. Or something like that anyway. Old knowledge, long forgotten things and stuff that perhaps shouldn't be meddled with lie within these shores. Etc. Etc.

    LOL!

I like your 'blurb' approach to the story

That's a really great land shape.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I've added a bit of terrain to the land as it was looking a bit flat and boring.

What method do you use for making your lumps and bumps? I like that look a lot.

I was going to ask the same thing!

This is a good looking map; the coastlines are great.

The bumps? Arrrggghhh! I spend hours ironing this map and I seem to have missed a bit

I can quickly explain what I've done but it may need more detail. Using a combination of some grunge brushes I found on DA, and a 50% grey colour, I stamped out, and slightly painted, where I wanted the higher ground to appear. I also used some of the brushes already in GIMP such as Grass and Chalk to give some subtle relief elsewhere using a lower opacity. Then I applied emboss (filters > distorts > emboss) using an azimuth of 120, 45 elevation and 60 depth. Then a 2 or 3 Gaussian blur to the layer and then I duplicated the layer. To one I set the layer mode to overlay with 50% opacity and to the other (above) I set the layer mode to multiply with 25% opacity.

Thanks for the explanation, Straf! I will try to play around with something like this in Photoshop.
