Map The Smuggler's lair (Tavernier's tutorial)

    Hello !

The other day. I came across a tutorial by Guillaume Tavernier, which you surely know. It is a tutorial in French, but it is subtitled in English and you can find it here.

As I really like what this artist does, I decided to try to follow his technique ... It's not easy, the video goes pretty fast (5 hours of work summarized in 25 minutes) and we see quickly the difference between amateurism and the professional, but I had a lot of fun to discover some tips that will be very useful. Incidentally, I also found a very useful brush, which I keep carefully.

I took me a lot more time than him to get to a result that is far from the master, but after all, the whole point isn't it to learn?

In any case, I can only advise you to take a little time and discover his method of work. In the meantime, here is the result of mine ... Let's say the good news is that there is still room for improvement

I whish you all a very happy new year !

    Jo

Oh, that is GREAT. Gorgeous colors and the light sources are amazing. I am in awe, and this goes right into my inspiration folder.

You are really hard with yourself ! The only differences for me are a slightly vivider color palette for your image and less assured strokes but besides those tiny differences, you are pretty close to the quality of Guillaume's work ! What you have really well captured IMO is the lighting technique. A fabulous map and I cannot wait to see more ! You certainly know this one but let's post it anyways, his fortified farm, not really tutorial but process. Almost one and a half hour of coloring without comments.

    Your map is amazing Joël

Thanks a lot Thomas ! Moreover because I didn't know Guillaume Tavernier's work until you mentioned it !
I'm glad you like this illustration... and as you said, the strokes makes a lot of difference : I had trouble adjusting to this brush, and I know I changed techniques during the whole process.. Sometimes I was glad with what I was doing, and for some other points, I found myself with my old unassured "childish" stroke... I really should practice more... If only I could retire now
Thanks for the link ! I didn't know he was using Sketchup or something like that for his building !

I agree with Thomas, you achieved a very good look here Joel.
When I first saw it, I thought you were sharing one of Guillaume's maps.
I love the color. You did a fine job.

Not yet, no. I've seen a few of Guillaume's other vids and had planned to try it out at some point.
But, for me, i am not sure i would get into that kind of map, and i have to think of clients seeing a thing and then wanting me to do that for them.
So, sometimes I don't take certain directions for that reason. Or don't show things i have done.
Also, as much as i like those maps.. I'm not sure how they would get used in a rpg game.
They're great for concept and visualization, no question. And gorgeous things to look at as well.
