I just got back into cartography and I'm transitioning into pen and paper. I'd say the easiest way to get involved is pencil, paper, and fineliner pens. You might want a ruler and a circle template for doing things like borders and compass roses. It really doesn't take much to get started. If you're not accustomed to drawing I'd be careful with the fineliners. I was very new to drawing when I first bought them and was way too heavy handed and smashed the tip of the finest pen back into the sleeve .
