Default Greetings from a Geoscientist/GIS professional

I found this community on Friday and have been lurking quite a bit all weekend. Finally signed up.

About myself. I graduated with a B.S. in Geography, specializing in GIS and physical geography. I didn't find many opportunities in GIS due to the economy and demand for programming skills, so decided to continue my education in Geosciences. I recently finished my PhD in tectonic geomorphology and must say illustrating my results is always the part I enjoy obsessing about. I'm glad to see so many others getting carried away with cartography.

Right now I am working on some of my own cartography projects related to landscapes of interest on earth However, I am also working on some more illustrative/artistic maps of cities and areas I'm connected to. This website seems like a valuable resource because I have very little experience illustrating in styles such as historical maps. I'm already downloading new softwares because of posts I read and can't wait to see what they can do.

I hope to share some of my recent scientific cartography work and anything else I bring to life in the future.

Welcome to the guild! There are a number of us who -to varying degrees- try to map in a realistic, earthlike style so you should fit right in!

This site caters to real world maps, 3D, GIS and any form of mapping. Even though most maps here are fictional fantasy many of us are interested in many other forms of maps and also experience in how real world mapping can be applied to fantasy maps too.

Nice to have you here !

    Thanks for the welcomes!

Yeah, I see a variety of mapping genres. In science we focus on communication of results. Creativity is great until it distracts from the results. It will be nice to see more of the artistic side of cartography. The fantasy/world-building and historical genres are quite outstanding from what I've seen so far. Maybe my own fictional ideas will come to life eventually.
