Post July/Aug Lite Entry - Red Riding Hood

Ok, I'll have a play with this one - it sounds like something I can get my teeth into...

I'm going to try to create something using just the original components of Viewingdale. I may have to add a few things, but we'll see.

Here's the first draft - not much more than a placeholder really, nothing to see yet.

Gingerbread House was Hansel and Gretel, Redrobes - like I need the creator of Viewingdale as a competition rival.

No, seriously, it would be good to see your take on that. Enter it.

I don't plan on showing the characters. I'm doing this one as a map rather than as a virtual environment.

Hopefully it won't look like Pong for long, Ravells, I was going to update it today, but what I did was total crap, so hit the Delete button. I'll have another go later.

    Ok, here's an update.

This might be as far as I'm going, certainly for today. Gimp has utterly exhausted my patience. It just seems so ridiculously convoluted to perform tasks that Word Draw will do in two clicks of the mouse!

The Viewingdale bit was done in about 40 minutes, the following two hours was spent trying to get gimp to add a few labels.

Then it decided not to save. Two hours work on four layers, and the screen freezes mid-save. Fortunately it unfroze when I threw the keyboard on the floor as I stood up to fetch the axe...

Hey thats pretty cool stuff. That lock up, thats the secret leprechaun installed into every PC keyboard. When you dropped it, he was knocked out for a while allowing the elves to save your file.

I was thinking about the gingerbread house... if I can find the right bag of sweets then ill do it.

That Serif Plus does seem to be alright, give it a go !

Oh and this reminds me, I need to start the lite thumbs for this month too.

You, my man, need Serif Drawplus!

Inkscape is the cheapo alternative, but I think you'll like Drawplus better. From what you say, it's much more suited to your way of drawing.

Always label in vector....it's ten times easier.

Thanks for the tip, Ravells. I probably picked the wrong program out of the hat. I've got Inkscape, I'll try importing the map into that and see if I can get better labels that way - I'm still not happy with them.

I actually like the transparent label for the map title, but smaller fonts become unreadable on the forest background.

    Thanks for the compliment Redrobes.

I wonder if Leprechauns like coffee...

    Well, I persevered - despite problems: http://www.cartographersguild.com/sh...24&postcount=1

Basically I just kept clicking and reclicking, unintentionally moving the base drawing more times than I care to recall, but eventually, I got the objects and labels on the map roughly where I wanted them. I'd still love to know how to select and move an object properly, though.

and came up with a new version. I included international pictograms instead of labels for the three buildings - I figured it added something, but I'm no artist.

EDIT: Oops, forgot to add these essentials:

"This design contains artwork that is © 2006-2008 FunDraw.Com." (Wolf in Bed)
Red Riding Hood clip courtesy of Susanne's Square
    Axe clip public domain

The licence to use required a credit, which I copied but forgot to paste.
