I think I'll give this a go. It'll be a good way for me to keep practicing and hopefully learn a few new techniques.
I'll try to post some history with the final map but for now here is my current WIP snapshot.
Any and all C&C is welcome, thanks!

Nifty start! I'm guessing the harsh colour trainsitions are going to be fold lines at some point?
Nice job on the water edges too!

Looks pretty decent, I like the way you did the coast ripples. You might want to vary your mountains some more and the forests tile but I'm sure that you're aware of that.

Before I call it a night I'll post my current version. I've changed the forests, touched up the fold lines, and worked a little on the mountains. I also added in the cities and roads.
I have some more naming to do, adding in the trade routes and some more adjustments. I'm not sure if I'm going to put in any sea routes or not. If I have time I might.

I like it, have some more reputation as encouragement!
The simple coloring (only a few colors) works really well.
Check out my City Designer 3 tutorials. See my fantasy (city) maps in this thread.
Gandwarf has fallen into shadow...
Thanks everyone for the feedback and encouragement!
I have added in the trading routes, more labels and made an attempt to make the paper look a bit more used and worn. Not sure if I pulled it off quit right though...
For the most part though I think it might be close to finished. I still have some time however so I'll keep trying to improve it.

I think it looks superb but you might want to make your trade route dots more visible and easier to see what color is what. Pretty nice, though.

The colours are looking very nice.
there's a few spots on the edges where the frayed edges don't look quite right, but that won't take much effort.
Overall, that's nice. My first thought when i saw the thumbnail was "Ooh!"

Here is my latest copy. Not much has changed. I worked a little on the edges and tried to make the trade routes more distinct between each other. My PS skills though are coming up dry (still learning the program). I'm ordering a tablet this weekend so next time I'll be able to use more then my mouse which I believe will help me out some
Thanks again everyone for the feed back

The tablet can be a lot of fun, but honestly, you can do anything with a mouse that you can with a tablet - or at least make it look like you can
The important thing here is that you got the approach and mindset, you can make any tool you work with do that job you need it to do.
I still love the way this is coming along.. *steals a few ideas...*
