    Help Greetings!

    Hello all!

I'm somewhat new to the world of photoshop and gimp, at least for the purposes of cartography. I'm really, really impressed by the quality of maps I've seen here.

Unfortunately, I'm also a technical idiot. I have read through the posted tutorial on gimp and had trouble following the instructions - is there anyone who could show me how to make good looking mountains? I just don't understand what the filters do in Gimp and am never able to recreate or make sense of my results. Thanks in advance for your help.

EDIT - for clarification, I'm going for mountains that have a "top down" look to them similar to the "Zoelund" map seen in this thread.

    Hello from France and welcome.
I can't help you about Gimp, but I'm sure that you're going to find help here.

Thank you, this is VERY helpful! The only question I have is for the second-to-last step where you say "apply it as a bump map to the original coloured one". How do you do that exactly?

Select the coloured layer, and Use Filter->Map->Bump map. Then as the Bump Map source (first dropdown) pick the greyscale layer.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I'm also looking for a nice Legend graphic to use in the map I'm constructing. Anyone have a good recommendation?
