Hey Konraw, welcome to the Guild!
Hi members,
This site is like manna. So glad that I found it! I have loved maps all my life. Navigated the family across the country on a holiday when I was 7!
After viewing and copying the map of Middle Earth and the Undying Lands in the 'Tolkien Bestiary' when I was 14, I started hand drawing my own 'worlds' and writing histories for them. I also started playing Advanced Dungeons and Dragons around the same time so it was inevitable that the two would eventually marry up and I started doing maps for my campaign. There's a clear evolution in my maps as I introduced better techniques and other elements over time. I like illuminated medieval manuscripts and have incorporated these into my maps. In the late 90s I printed up 1000 lithographs of one of my maps to sell them. I sold about 30 in three months before giving up and have used the remainder ever since as Christmas and birthday wrapping paper! I still have about 900 sheets in my parents loft!
It's very interesting to see the maps here done with software. Really makes me wish I had my own A0 size printer!! There are many wonderful examples of map work on show here
I've put 4 of my maps into an album here. I tried adding another but it seems there's a limit around 10mb or thereabouts and I was informed that the limit was exceeded. Can I create a second album? I tried and as soon as I tried to download another map it immediately said that my limit was exceeded so does that mean that there is a 'site limit' of around 10mb?
I haven't done any maps this century(!) but since discovering this site a couple of weeks ago, I noticed I've been glancing at the large card sheets in the art shops so who knows.
Right, off to work and see you later
Mike
Hey Konraw, welcome to the Guild!
Hello Mike, welcome to the Guild! I'm not sure, but I suspect the album limit is temporary until you have been here long enough to be real and not a spammer. You can't use the private message system until you have 5 posts, so the album may have a similar restriction.
As for loving maps, you have certainly come to the right place. I suspect 100% of the members here could say the same thing.
A large or fancy printer is not a requirement to make nice maps, since you can always have them printed at a print shop. More important is some software that works well for your style.
There is a great tutorial in the sticky section of Tutorials, called Quickstart Guide to Fantasy Mapping: http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=4276
From there, go to Hand Drawn Mapping for the Artistically Challenged: http://www.cartographersguild.com/sh...ad.php?t=10655
Once you have completed those two tutorials, you'll be well on your way!!
Hi Mike, welcome to the Guild! I've really enjoyed looking at the maps you've posted. I'm not sure about the 10mp limitation either. Chick may be right here, or it may also be that that the limitation applies to individual maps (what is the size of the map you are trying to upload)? Anyway, please feel free to show off more of your earlier work in our finished maps sections, and start plugging away at some new material!
Cheers,
-Arsheesh
