Default A question on mapping programs for a beginner

I just joined the forum in homes that I can find some info on mapping programs. I have tried several of the online mapping programs but they leave a whole lot to be desired. I am basically a newbie when it comes to mapping.... A lot of the mapping programs just do dungeons or buildings or small areas.

I am looking for something that I can create a whole world by adding mountains, deserts, forests plains and oceans and coastlines and then add cities and other important mapping icons.

Most of the online mappers do not allow much in the way of customization or changes...and others do not do world scale maps.

Are there any mapping programs that would be good to use??

I DO NOT use Microsoft operating systems so ....

but for WHOLE planets ( earth like , land and water ) most fractal noise based programs will work

One program for windows(™©) is Wilbur
you can make HeightMaps like this

or using a few different programs for a planet map ( unlabled) like this
    http://www.cartographersguild.com/al...chmentid=68900

or for the "Pen & Ink drawn" look
"The Gimp' or "inkscape" are both FREE and under the GPL license

    look in the tutorials section
