Thread: Hello All!

    Default Hello All!

Greeting from an amateur history reader and writer!

Medieval European history is at the moment my major reading as a hobby. Sometimes I also try to write it out in my own language (Mandarin Chinese). When a history involves so many geographical terms as in that of the medieval Europe, a well-made map is way more better than any desperate effort of a writer using plain texts. When writing my own, I have so far relied upon randomly-googled free maps and now I grow bit tired of it, especially when the quality and styles can not be consistent using this quick solution. This is how I am led here, and WOOOOW, I think what people can offer are definitely overkills to my humble imagination of how an ideal history map can be.

Hope I can learn a lot from you guys!

Hi Hanzo, and welcome! If you're just getting started with mapping, it might be worthwhile to work through two or three tutorials. Even if the final results aren't what you want, they'll teach you techniques that you can take further yourself. Check out this post for an intro to digital mapping. There are also a bunch of PDF tutorials to download and work on in this comment. I'm not sure what software you'll be using, but there are certainly plenty of guides for Photoshop (paid software) or Gimp (free).

I hope this at least points you in the right direction, but if you need further help, just ask. You're welcome to start a thread in one of the Work-In-Progress folders, if you'd like some advice and critique as you work on your map. Good luck!
