Thread: Lexicon for newb cartographers

  1. #1

    Default Lexicon for newb cartographers

I was looking around but couldn't find anything that worked like a lexicon; a single source with all of the various bits and pieces of a map defined for us new to cartography.

There are lots of threads and I'm sure there's a topic for every item on a map, but I don't know what to search for to find any of them since I don't know what to call it. Using something like "those seemingly random straight lines that cover some maps and vaguely correspond to cardinal directions" seems a bit imprecise.

Thanks for any help pointing me in the right direction.

I agree that a lexicon or glossary of terms would be useful. I know that we have had something along those lines in the past but unless the thread gets stickied then it gets lost in the forest of threads on the forum.

The lines you are referring to are Rhumb lines on a Portolan Chart:

This link has some but both rhumb and portolan are not amongst them:

On that peculiar topic, I've got that Twitter tutorial (in French).
