I was thinking along the same lines last night as I was reading some of the realism threads here and looking at satellite shots of the Earth. On the eastern part of the continent I dialed back on the forest area. As for the desert, I was thinking of the rough area as more rocky and perhaps a bit high elevation, but not mountains, tried to make that more clear below.
