So while I was trying to figure out the problem I'm having with forests, I found an old map that I started and never finished. It's combining elevation practice and shading to show sharp contrast in depth.

The basics were fairly simple: outline the shape of the ledge, shrink things down to create the bottom of the 'pit' and then add contour lines to connect the two.

Shade, Shade, Shade...more shade...erase, try shading again, highlight, shade, highlight, etc.
