Want to DM for friends but didn't have a world, so i'm creating one

I don't have a name for my world yet. I'm sure at some point I will. I don't feel right starting as a new GM in a world that I know very little about... and instead of doing a bunch of research on an existing world, I wanted to create my own with its own geography, cultures and mysteries.

This is going to be an extremely daunting project for me, and I can't really share my development of my world with my friends/players because I want them to be able to explore it, so I figured I would chronicle my progress here and maybe get some feedback from others.

I don't have much artistic talent, so I started off creating my world with Hexographer... but found out it's a lot of work.

I decided partway through that I wanted something more than a hex map... I figured I would try my hand at using what I built in hexographer and continue building the world with GIMP. As a photoshop guy in the past, this gives me a great opportunity to learn nuances of GIMP.

Again, like i said I don't have much artistic talent so I am building my world up from brushes created by others. Hopefully with enough time and creativity I can create something that satisfies me enough.
