You could certainly manipulate the land to affect the weather or seas, like adding a bunch of rocks where a beach used to be. Hmm - maybe that is something that would have to be done on a smaller-scale map than this, of the overall region. I can accentuate the ripples in the ocean in some places with some short, broken-up strokes to indicate the rockier shores. That's probably a good idea for incorporation into this map.

I got a couple responses and ideas here and on Twitter, and this is what I decided to do: think about Austable and what he has to do with this map. He's got to indicate terrain types, but he's also got to have the ability to change them relatively easily. So, if I shade in lines on the ocean, for instance, and then try to alter the coastline, my poor cartomancer has to be able to change all the waves and shading and whatnot. For that reason, I am going for some sparse symbols in the land to indicated terrain types, and I may leave the oceans open.

Here's what I've got so far. Shout-out to Thomas for the rocky terrain idea. I was trying to do something a bit more loose and flowy with the grasslands, but ultimately decided that being precise was both better suited to my pen and more like what Austable would do.
