and I have to say a very fine avatar it is too
WOW so many entries! Must map too... I must find time these months to enter the challenge ( been too long since I last entered ). This is just a placeholder. I'm thinking two directions, one is an aged and weathered streetmap (grunge grunge!) and the other is basically a 3d-ish 'make-over'. Dwarvish make-over, monster make-over, or maybe New York on the planet Calypso... I'll post asap. well, I already joined the avatar make-over fun cheers!

Ok, for the "aged paper map" I did a manual trace (omg, this took me a complete night ) of an old map (1923) of the city and started adding some grunge... Still not happy with the look but ready for experimenting now cheers!

Yeah, there's lots of roads in new york....
That is amazing texturing work. I can't wait to see what you to with it!
Every time I look at this I get a sick feeling in my stomach over you having to sit and draw all those lines. I'm thinking I would go cross-eyed and hurl if it was me. It looks awesome but I think I'd go mad.

Ok, experiment #1. I used the carefully drawn streets to generate a futuristic version of New York (still in low-res render o save time and did a quick blend with the original map. Not perfect but maybe I can get it to work... to be continued I guess...
edit: oops wrong version, now good version

thanks, the blend was indeed a 5 mins job to see if this could work. would need loads of work but maybe worthwhile. The city was generated in Blender using some procedural city generator. I used the streetmap and landmass to generate a bumpmap and in 5 minutes you got this nice city rendered
