    I'm experiencing a clash of styles; the way I'm doing the inset doesn't look good with the main map. Just frustrated, but I'll push through.

    I can see how that would work. I'd suggest expanding and contracting a selection based on that shoreline to even out some of the detail and then stroke it with a mid blue - darker than the sea. Then have the sea a bit darker than the standard sea and the land a little darker too, then you'll have a colour contrast but keep some continuity. But the main thing is the contract in the level of detail between the two. I think you'll need to lose some of the detail in the inset to integrate it into the piece.
