I would suggest doing a displacement map(perhaps followed with a bit of blur) on the ocean/land outlines. They look way to regular. Especially the island under the coiled serpent.

Here's an update, with tentative towns and cities. The green tribal icons are elven settlements, the mine openings are dwarven, and the rest are human. Black are independents, while the three colors are those who are engaging in war against one another for control of the trade route to the elven people.
