Welcome Aboard!
If your in a money crunch regarding software than I would highly suggest GIMP (can't beat the price).
There are also a large # of tutorials available for it.
Hello all,
I've been running roleplay games for a while now. I started with Merp in '87. Since then I've run Rolemaster(most editions), 3rd ed.D&D, Vampire and Harp.
I'm new to computer generated maps, but I'm really interested in the end results some of you have achieved. Very impressive.
I've not got a clue which software is best for me to download. I've read good things about GIMP and CC3.
I'm interested in creating broad, epic landscapes, with an imposing mountain range and sinister forests.
Any help appreciated.
EDIT...... a typo on my very first post. Not a good start that i spelt "cartographer" incorrectly. Serves me right for not checking.

Software choice depends totally on how far you want to take it and how much you have to spend. CC3, Fractal Mapper and the like are reasonably priced and have lots of built-in tools for mapping...but I've never got on with them very well personally (I should say just with Fractal Mapper...haven't tried Campaign Cartographer actuall). Same for Dunjinni. I'd say Photoshop (and Illustrator for vectors) is the penultimate mapping software, but it's pricy if you're not a student or something, and it's a "from-scratch" sort of deal. Gimp (and Inkscape for vectors) is the no-cost alternative and it seems quite capable...RobA and other around here work wonders with it. There are lots of tutorials around for mapping with these tools.
Looking forward to seeing your sinister forests and such!

Welcome!
I'm a newbie here myself, but I've been very impressed with the number of tutorials available to help get you started. Quite a few for GIMP, which might be your best bet (at least in the price department).
cheers!
