Yes, a strong zoom reveals the holes. Without reference or scale it is really hard to get.

I can't what is supposed to represent what at all, I'm afraid.
Copy the imagine into paint or something, then zoom in all the way. Once you zoom in far enough it suddenly becomes obvious that the central white bit if a very high peak, while the "Blotches" turn into large pits and changes in elevation.
just adobe photoshop. I usually create Actions with Displace effect. Set it to 1 and then REuse it. If you use it at 20 it sucks, if you use it 20times with "1" or "-1" then it gets cooler. check my other more meaningfull maps
I have no time to make a tutorial about these, sorry!
especially like the first one - very nice

I think the idea is that when you see the pits, you go SUICIDAL. Works for me!

I think I got it when I "placed" the light blue at the center at the same height as the outer blue area... It's like creating a height map, but with different colors for different peaks... But now that I see it, it works for me!
DEDDESO: It's amazing that I just noticed you posted those in the thread just after I downloaded the first of those two maps you put up. I am making a module for my campaign based around Yeti's and the daemonic Wendigo they worship as a god, so am hunting for snow maps. What do you happen to post? A very lovely snowy map that is completely perfect for the treacherously icy mountain ranges that I am portraying.
