Thread: Hello

  1. #1

    Default Hello

I find terrain and maps fun and interesting.
    I'm a 27-year-old female, and run Linux.
I am currently looking for good resources and found a couple here.

I also like the GIMP tutorials that I saw here ...

It inspired me to try something that was more simple than what was in the forums, but something that might be useful anyway.

It kind of looks like a sci-fi kind of thing or maybe a planar texture. It's interesting thats for sure. Good job and Welcome to the Guild .

Welcome, its a maybe from me. I reckon you could do with posting the height map of the terrain and then using that as a reference to index into a climate map. Then it should colour it up so that its snowy on mountains that are very high etc. Although I use linux for some things I dont generally do my terrain on linux. What have you been using so far ? Has it been bitmap editors like Gimp ? What I think you will need is a terrain editor which uses height maps. You could use wine to use some of the windows ones but here are some Windows suggestions. Wilbur, Leveller, Global Mapper, World Machine. GeoControl. You can use noise and bitmap operations. I personally like ImageMagick which is definitely available for linux as are some of the noise libraries which have been used to great effect if you can get a linux app which has linked to them. Search for LibNoise here and you will see several posts. I think with Gimp you could use the tuts here to try out some of them too.

In some cases the colors seem to follow the physical terrain, in some cases it does not, and that makes it a bit confusing in my opinion. If these are different soils or some sort of atmospheric condition I'd expect it to follow the physical terrain more closely. I don't think this is something that could be accomplished with a bit of tweaking, the image overall is quite nice. (Of course you could have intended to have wide bands of color like that, perhaps to underscore the alien nature of this planet.)

I'd love to hear more about your world
