Amateur Cartographer Seeking River Thru Marshland (Must Love Dogs)
On a world map I am working on I have a river flowing into a tropical marsh. I am having trouble incorporating it into the map. Would I just draw the river thru the marsh? Would the river disappear into the marsh only to come out of the other side? Would the river simply disappear (I am thinking about making the swamp near the coast a mangrove)?
Has anyone else faced this issue before? Any ideas?

I would also guess that it depends on the scale of the two? The Mississippi flowing through the Louisiana Bayou is so large that it is still recognizably a river, although the argument could also be posted that the Bayou isn't a typical marshy area, but a river delta instead. Those who know more than me on hydrography and geology (if I even have those terms right) would have to say for sure.

Assuming I stick with fantasy cartography, I'd like to become a World Builder, laying out not only a realistic topography, but also the geopolitical boundaries and at least rough descriptions of the countries and societies.
Mangrove delta type thing sounds like the best solution.

I think I am going to go with the delta/mangrove. That seems right anyway, and the marsh in question was going to be vast. Somewhat like the Pantanal region of the Amazon. Thanks for the feedback all.
Looking at the bayou's/marshes/etc. of Louisiana might give you some inspiration as well.

I will do that. I was also thinking of looking at the Mekong Delta in Viet Nam as well. I saw the Apocalypse Now Redux yesterday. It doesn't have as much swampy areas, but the area I am looking at also has thick jungles.Originally Posted by Steel General
