Hi there. After meeting ravells at a con last weekend, and separately (and independently) identifying my main weakness in GMing con games is my total lack of maps / handouts / props, I've decided to finally do it and try to learn how to do some mapping. Mainly I'm interested in simple stuff I can stick in front of my players, and I am one of those people who believes they have no artistic talent whatsoever (although, as a musician and mathematician, I realise I'm probably deluding myself with that), so I guess my starting point is GIMP and some of the simple tutorials. I'm also more interested in quick and easy rather than accurate and complex maps. Anyway, neat site / forum / etc.

Welcome to the Guild. A number of us who are accomplished mappers claim to be bereft of artistic ability.... even if you had no graphical arts in your hands, you can get decent results as a technician. Further - I betcha didn't start out very musical when you took up music... mapping too is a pursuit that benefits greatly from practice. So pick a tutorial that seems to lead in a likeable direction, and see what you get.

Mapping has the delightful aspect that often even one's "mistakes" just turn out to be serindipitous *possibilities*. Be bold about posting in a work-in-progress thread, and you'll garner helpful tips, criticism, suggestions....
