What did you use to map this? ... looks like inkscape or illustrator. Just curious
I'm having a problem with this month's contest. Partly because I frankly suck at puzzles, and partly because I cannot make up my mind on what I want. I'm actually on my second or third map (depending on how one counts). The present one, and the one I'll have to 'go with (though I have no secret as of yet) is something I put together doing some real-worldish cartography.
The "Ish" comes from the fact that the greenland map has some differences in it from the 'real' Greenland, some of which by accident, others design. The longitude and latitude lines are half correct, half guestimates; the pack Ice is sorta-kinda; the Glacier is meh and the Oceanic Glaciers are certainly fiction. I wouldn't want to sail with this thing in our world.
So lets call this an Alternate Earth shall we?
The original concept was a Nazi map, their effort to find the mystical Aryan-Precursor Thule (as in the Thule Society, cue music: dun-dun-duuuuun!). Not entirely sure anymore if I want to go that route not only wat the Heck I want to make the secret. I placed towns and whatnot on the map per present day (although Century City was disbanded in the late 70s I think...) although this too might change depending on what I do next.
Edit:
Latest/final version here. I have attached a pdf as well for the backstory. The Greenland_Thule3 Map corresponds to the general Greenland map attached on Ace's first email, the Greenland_Thule_koh_fin map(s) are the working copy (with notes and some desk debris) which Ace used to work out the puzzle "Do you know the way to Ultima Thule?" while en route. The zip contains the tiff file for the 'puzzle map', which does not have the color distortion of the gif (but is 5 meg when unpacked). The pdf tells the backstory, but should not be required to figure out the puzzle (which is what the notes on it are for) however fans of intertexuality might find it amusing.

Illustrator.
I like the sharpness of the lines personally.
Sunny day, sweeping the

On my way

Well, my version is a little screwed up. If that's a problem you could go with Klingonese version.
A day of the daytime star.
The clouds are compelled to commence fleeing, and are filled with dread.
I have a destination;
and there, because of the atmosphere, I am pleased.
Describe to me immediately
how to go to Ultima Thule.
A little more intimidating perhaps.

Not as a parody That is why I like it. Although I have what now? A few hours to come up with something? I may just fold it, a lot of things came down in the middle of the month (including paying work that I have been doing).
Geez, it took me three days to trace out those coasts.
Ahh Publius, since your online - would you like to put a Latest WIP tag just before your entry, for the WIP scraper thumbnails ?
