Help Symbols for cities, capitals, etc.

    Hi,

sorry if this has been already said somewhere, but I did some quick searches and couldn't find anything.

Is there somewhere some good set of symbols to use for cities, capitals and the like? I mean that kind of "star inside a circle" symbols. I could make my own, but I'd like to know first what is what the pros are using :-)

    Thanks in advance.

If you are on windows, check the the charmap application which allows you to select a font and see all of the "letters" in it. Wingdings has many items that could be used for village, town, city type symbols(but no star in a circle as far as I know.)

You probably ought to try this first:

If that doesn't work, take it out of the first posting here:

Id say the pros make their own and add them to their tool bag to pull back out if another occasion arises for them to be used. If you can, I say make your own. It gives your map a uniqueness that will help it stand out from the rest. either way i hope you find what you need
    Cartography is fun.

There isn't really any particular standard that I'm aware of for city point symbology. It's generally a dot or dot within a dot for a city, with the size often relating to the size or importance of the city. Capitals often have a star, star on a dot, dot on a star, or something like that.

There are plenty of other options like varying the label. A double underline for a national capital and a single underline for a regional capital for instance.

Use whatever provides the clearest and easiest to read result for your map and the particular information you want to convey with it.

I Guess a good question is, are you doing Modern or Fantasy?

Fantasy cities are usually represented by the following:

    SYMBOLS.PNG

Even though I use CC3, I tend to make my own City Symbols with just Circles and Stars.

Any questions on CC3? Post them with CC3 in the Subject Line!

Thanks for all, folks. What you've posted is great stuff, and I've found a few other places on the net with symbols alike. Thanks!
