Oh, well that's true. The brushes are actually drawn with pencils on rough-ish sketch paper, then scanned.

I love the effect. Since I'm experimenting with calligraphic maps (and having an hard time by the way) I think I'll give it a try!

Well, I think it depends on the style of the map. Perhaps they're less realistic, but they would be my choice for a more cartoonish map.
The overall effect is cool, perhaps it just needs a bit of variation. And traits are light, which means they can be colored more easily.
