satellite image composite maps?

Hi there,

I found this very cool pseudo-tutorial while browsing /r/worldbuilding and thought i'd share it - http://rubysaturna.net/2011/09/ficti...-map-tutorial/

the pages im linking to are not my own but i thought they were so cool i couldnt help but share them here. This is the first time i have seen fantasy maps made from real-world satllite images (public domain - thanks to nasa) though i have entertained the option before. I was wondering if anyone else here has made such maps before and what you think abnout such maps in general - not fitting of a fantasy world? (though perfect for an alternate earth timeline or sci-fi worldbuilding).
