Hey there,
Not sure where to post this so this seems as good a place as any.
I recall reading a great thread on here once that explained all the names and functions of the elements of a map, such as graticules, neatlines and the like. It may have been part of a tutorial. I couldn't swear to it but I believe it was by Hai-Etlik.
Well I've been searching for it but no luck so far. Does anyone know which thread I'm thinking of and can provide a link?
Cheers.

This isn't the exact thread I was looking for but I'd never seen it and it is very informative so thanks a lot for the link.
I have a feeling the thread I was looking for was a tutorial, probably on making a border. It described the correct terminology and positioning of stuff there.
What I am actually wanting to know is the correct term for the patterned bar that runs around the outside of many maps. I've always known it as the graticule, but that seems to be the correct term for the grid to mark off longtitude and latitude. Now, as the bar usually lines up with those lines does it follow that it is called a "graticule bar" or "graticule edge" or something?
Thanks in advance for anyone that can help.

Ok, found it myself. It was actually this tutorial by Arsheesh that I was thinking of...

The bar is a Neatline. I had it wrong and thought a Neatline was just basically a line inside the border area. Duh.

Just now saw this. I had to do a bit of fact-finding to try to figure out what the terms referred to, and if I recall sometimes people equivocated a bit on the terms. But to the best of my knowledge the terminology is more or less accurate.

Neat! Nice tutorial, has anyone converted this to PS?
Hmm, I'll take a look at converting it see what I can do.
Would I just make a new post or add it as a reply to the thread?
