Excellent start!

I absolutely love the look of vorropohaiah's maps, especially this one: http://www.cartographersguild.com/ca...ropohaiah.html, so I decided to use a similar style for a map of my own. If mine looks one-tenth as good, I'll be happy.
Here is what I have so far:
Alcia1_WIP.jpg
I started with a hand-drawn map, which I scanned and used as a tracing template in GIMP. I am mostly happy with the coastline, but I may tweak some of the river systems. I am not sure how I feel about the colors either; maybe I will go with a more washed-out look for the water.
The next step is mountains, hills, forests, etc. I plan to use hand-drawn brushes, either my own or existing ones. I have been sort of following Gidde's Hand-Drawn Map Tutorial, and will probably do something similar for this next step.
Excellent start!

I've added mountains and hills. I'm not sure I am happy with the large hilly area on the southern continent. It looks a little off. I'll see how I feel about it in the morning. Next step is trees. I think I may try Ramah's http://www.cartographersguild.com/ma...treething.html and see how it works.

Seems that you scale up the hills brush which make them blurry, by the way the looks too big regarding the mountains imo. Also you should work on your rivers since they look heavily pixellated atm. Keep it up!
Thanks for the input, Max.
Second attempt at mountains and hills. This time, I used cereth's hand-drawn elements: http://www.cartographersguild.com/ma...-elements.html

Great start !! This is just a personal opinion but you might try toning down the colors or opacity of your mountains. With the lovely ground color you are using they are a bit stark in contrast. Keep up the great work
