Oh dear. Just realized I spelled centaur wrong on my map. Well... that happened. Embarrassing.
Hello Cartographers!
I have a limited but loving relationship with DnD. I've not played much, but I've always known that the role meant for me was DM. I've had a few short experiences in that role, but life, career (moving constantly), and time restraint has always kept me from being able to do what I've always passionately burned for... creating my own world and guiding people through it. I recently moved back to my home town, and have a group of friends here who have always wanted to play but never had a person willing to make the commitment to DM. I've decided to take up that responsibility, and I must say that even in the infancy stages of my creation, I'm already having a blast. I started looking around online for help in developing my world, and this website was immediately the most prevalent. I started looking through the maps that I could find here, and in about 2-3 hours I'd created my own map that (while not nearly as high quality as the ones I was referencing) I am quite happy with. I look forward to enhancing my skill in this craft and learning from the masters that are creating things here, but I felt it would be immoral to not register and express my appreciation and thankfulness that this forum exists, and the immense value I found within it.
I'm sure some may see similarities in my first map with others found here, and I hope nobody is offended that their influence affected my planning. As I said, this is my first map ever attempted, so I hope I'm not too harshly judged or scrutinized. I intend to create the best campaign I can for my players, and I've already written pages upon pages of notes to detail my world so that the players can create their own story, and I'll never be left grasping for answers.
The title of my thread says it all. I was at a loss for how to begin something like this for the first time, and all I needed was a guiding hand in mapping a world out... and the rest just started to come naturally as I looked at the map. Thank you, each and every member. This website really helped me take a leap into a role I was unsure about, and I'm brimming with excitement and confidence because of it.
Thanks Cartographers! I've attached a scan of my first map. Any feedback, be it negative or positive, would be greatly appreciated! It was hand drawn, although I am a web/graphic designer and understand the value of Adobe... It just felt right to pencil it out this time. I'm sure that further down the path I will delve into the digital realm, I just didn't really feel like it was right at this juncture.

Hi! Welcome to the Guild! Your map looks fairly welldone to me. I also feel pen or pencil is right tool for map drawing from time to time. Still getting used to digital area.
That looks really cool! I especially like the forest style.
