Hello and welcome to the Guild!
I'd suggest to use Campaign Cartographer 3 (CC3). I have read it's great program to make awesome maps.
Personally I'm using Fractal Mapper 8.0 untill I can buy CC3.
Happy mapping!

Hi fellow!!
If you have been doing it by hand until now, I recommend you don't stop doing that way. You can do the same with a mouse or if you really like it, and have the money, with a graphic tablet in Photoshop (or a free image manipulation program like GIMP) or Illustrator (or a free vectorial program version like Inkscape)

I have to agree with Meriba. If you have good drawing abilities, use those to sketch, then scan the sketch in. THEN you can start with your graphics editor, *cough* GiMP *cough, or another one that you like.
Even if you don't have the great talent that we see from the Community Leaders and other artists here, learning the ropes from sketch onwards will give you much more insight into how things work, and you might even find that it will turn a decent sketch into an incredible map.
But this is an old man ranting and forgets this is the modern era where instant gratification trumps all
Welcome aboard!
