Has this map been taken?
Sorry in advance if I'm doing this wrong - a writer friend directed me to this site and gave a stern lecture about following procedure and being nice so I'm trying!
I am writing my first horror novel, and it's getting hard to keep track of the town in my head. I tried to make a map of my own, but my drawings get last place in art contests for toddlers (or would, if I dared to enter one) so ... yeahno.
PAYMENT:
I am unsure on how to handle this matter, so I put [Unpaid]. I am willing to pay commiserate market value for the map if I sell the book for which I am requesting the map (or inherit millions, or win the lottery, or have money fall into my lap... you know... anything that means I'm not as broke as I am now!) but unfortunately have no means to pay at the current time.
I was tentatively told that if I do sell the work, payments for the use of the maps would be $50 each, if the novel sells, and they are not included in the book, and more if either or both are. I am very willing to discuss any and all payment arrangements which would likely be handled through PayPal.
To discuss payment, please contact me at the address provided at the bottom of this post.
Subject
•I am sorry I do not understand how to attach a sketch of the map, though I do have a (really bad) sketch, if I can find a way to get it to you.
•The maps would be a small fictional town (Cherry Creek) in which my novel is set. The population of the town is around 300. There is an elementary school, a high school, a diner, a church, and several large manor-type houses. In the center of town is a park which includes a banyan tree (they grow larger than most houses) surrounded by lots of grassy lawn, and a small fenced play area. The entire park is fenced in. I have NO idea what layout to have, and my only real requirement is that the park be central to the town, and that the Elementary school be "across town" from my main characters house. In addition, since banyans grow best in wet, tropical climes, I thought it would be nice if there was a large river or swamp bordering or cutting through the town. This could be handled in whatever way is most plausible - I bow to your superior knowledge.
•The scale of the map will be up to you - I truly just need something to gaze at while writing, so I don't make errors.![]()
Style
•I am not sure of the style, but as for taste, my writer friend linked me first to a contest thread and these two pictures were appealing:
http://www.cartographersguild.com/at...sptownwip3.jpg
http://www.cartographersguild.com/at...y-kashir-5.jpg
•The first map would be ... anything really, preferably something modernish, or a simple black and white sketch. Something for me to look at. The second map needs to be the sort of map a town hall would have, showing the borders of each property - it would be a map made in the early - mid 1900's. The town would be relatively unchanged - shockingly similar, actually, to its current state.
Quality & Size
•Wouldn't everyone love everything to be professional quality? It's unpaid - I won't be picky
•Depending on your preference and desires of an editor/agent, it may be required for print
•Whatever dimensions are best to work in/print in a novel?
•I apologize, I don't know what raster of vector is.
Time Constraints
Time uhmm... Well I have at least a month to write, couple months or more of rewrites/editing, months of querying agents, more months of locating an editor, another month or more of rewrites, and then 6 months or more before it's published.
I won't need anything for print for at least a year. I would like something I can write from (even a rough sketch) as soon as possible, so I can, uh, write from it, but it isn't vital, so it wouldn't need to take priority over any other projects.
Copyright
Geez, uhm... I just want something for me, really. I suppose I should ask for reproduction rights in case the map is what sells an editor or agent? It's a horror novel, not fantasy or anything, so I doubt it will be printed, but maybe?
•I would like reproduction rights to the map
•The artist will retain copyright of the map
•I will have the right to use the image for commercial purposes, the artist will have the right to exhibit the image as part of his portfolio. I am willing to discuss whether the artist will have the right to exploit it for commercial gain. I honestly don't see a map making it into a horror novel, so if this commercial gain thing is a deal-breaker, I'd be willing to just not even submit the map.
•I'd prefer that if the artist does use the map that they keep the name as "Cherry Creek".
•I would of course, include the artist in the acknowledgements.
•Signatures welcome and encouraged
I really just need a visual to work from.

Hey Arsheesh, I started the work but she was not able to continue at the time due to finances.
