Thread: Amateur Map

    Wip Amateur Map

Hey, this is a map for my hypothetical-MMORPG. I don't know what tools to use for proper mapping, and I'm very cheap.
Feedback would be appreciated, sorry if my work is of such low quality that it burns the eyes. I made it on Microsoft Paint.

First, go to www.gimp.org and download the free program GIMP. Then search this forum for all the many tutorials on using GIMP. Make a few practice maps and post them, and you will get plenty of ideas, help, and constructive criticism.

Could you explain what is the signification of the different colours ?

It's supposed to signify different types of habitats, but I forgot to put reference for that.
White is for colder areas like tundras and ice shelfs, purple is for alpine forests, light green areas with plains and thin forests, turquoise is for marshes and swamps, gray is for barren, stoney regions.
There are two types of desert, tan for hard-baked deserts and orange for sandy deserts.
Yellow is for savannah, dark green denotes jungles or thick forests.
Black is for volcanic areas, and there is a pale green area that signifies a thick swamp/jungle.

I feel pretty unsatisfied with this map, I prefer the one I have in a notebook. I mostly made it to help myself decide what the areas will be like.

That's a step in the right direction, Varof. Are you still using MSPaint or have you tried GIMP yet?

Thanks. That map was on GIMP, I'm still getting used to it.
