Hello MrJokee, welcome to the Guild!
Will be great to have another knowledgeable member who cares about the science behind his geography I'll look forward to seeing some of your maps as soon as you are ready to show them!
Hey guys and gals,
I spent the last two nights browsing the tutorials on these forums and I decided to join in. I don't know what people usually share here, but I'm well traveled, graduated last month from, got my undergrad in Journalism and English but throughout the school career I took up a bunch of geography courses to prep for my career, that is writer. I am currently working on a map for my world (and by currently, I mean I have about 3 hours worth of work done and been doing it for 3 years) and seeing the tutorials here, I think I can get this stuff sorted out quickly.
My biggest issue is that I know all the details that I want to work on to make my maps, which causes all my problems. For example, I know the relations between tectonics and range formations, and I can't have a mountain range just drawn anywhere. Everything needs to make sense scientifically. That's why it took me so long to get 3 hours worth of work down.
I am currently working on a 6x4 feet roll of paper but I am switching to Photoshop for the smaller, detailed maps.
Anyway, I am looking forward to your input and any help, and I am looking forward to offering stuff I know.

Thanks. All I need is a push to actually get down and dirty with it. Been procrastinating too long on it.
Welcome.
I'd recommend you to try Wilbur. It is a fractal field software generating height maps and quite math heavy to understand its inner workings - something challenging for the scientifically trained.
Thanks, will look into it. I was gonna start photoshoping it but I find mouse control...clunky. Also I seem to have issues with detail/grand scheme of things when using Photoshop. I use it in my magazine designs quite often but that's usually to correct photos, create textures and stuff like that. To actually draw is quite complicated. I decided to go back to paper and pencils. Then I will scan it. Hopefully in a good enough resolution.
Just thought I'd bump myself up. I'm still here. Haven't posted anything in a while. Been busy. I am working on a map (hand drawn, ink pen). I will be getting my drawing pad on friday so afterward, I will start learning to use it in Photoshop. I will post my map here, somehow, when its done.
A map must contain the following four elements: Title, Author, Scale and Orientation. It should also contain these two elements: Date and Legend. Without these, it's just a piece of paper with something on it.
