This is gorgeous! Like Freodin, the way I do labels in GIMP is to not. I use photoshop for the labels. It's one of the very few things I like better in PS than GIMP.

jbgibson, thank you! The marshland went through lots of iterations and I'm happy it seems to have turned out well. The forests too were just blobs initially. Then I cut them back according to where I thought people would have logged - along the edges, river valleys and so on. It's true you don't see forested hills or mountains that much in the more traditional fantasy perspective style. Something to try...

Gidde, thanks! Sadly my budget does not stretch to PS... maybe one day.

    Sheldonl, thank you!

Understood, PS is crazy pricy. In which case (nod to Freodin) I'd grab inkscape, it's still easier You can actually rustle labels into shape in GIMP but it takes a ton of time and (virtual) sweat.

This is an incredible map. The quality of the contours is the first thing that blew me away, but then I started looking closely, and the details of sites/roads/routes etc is equally fantastic.

For any community leaders reading, can I nominate this work for a Cartographers' Choice?

Give it a rating We decide the CC maps (at least partly) based on the ratings they receive from members of the Guild.

    Great map indeed!
I really like the style you used, you got it: a perfect mid 20th century map!
I'm using contours in my own WIP too, and I'm still struggling with them: it seems they are never ending... however I think that final result worths well the effort.
    I gave you some rep!

TheHoarseWhisperer, thank you, I'm glad you like it!

AzurePlanet, thanks! and yes the contours were time consuming. My big regret is that I drew them straight in as bitmaps and didn't vector them. I'll check out your WIP.

This is very very cool. It's great to see the world of Titan getting some more love, and such finely detailed love!

In case it's not just me who only just discovered this , Mike Schley has done some maps of Kakhabad (just across that Western Ocean), including Kharé: Cityport of Traps, and the Shamutanti Hills. They're a few items down on this page, or you can find out about the game they're for here.

Did anyone every play the Sorcery! game books? They had a style all their own, as this old map shows.

Honestly I didn't mean to hijack this, your map is fantastic and just got me excited about Titan again. Your atlas style here could well become the definitive map!

    cheers,
    Meshon
