    Default Introducing... Me!

G'day all, I'm going to be lurking here while I figure out what I want to use for mapping etc. so I thought I would introduce myself. I recently started DMing D&D games and want something to create maps for this. I have always loved maps, I want to write fantasy, probably just for the maps! So in addition to using my created maps for D&D I also want to create worlds to create fiction in. I have played around a little with Maptools but want something to create really impressive maps with. I've quickly looked at Campaign Cartographer but am a little wary at the cost (for the three main programs plus the add ons etc) so am looking forward to trawling through this site to see what people think. I also have GIMP. I look forward to interacting with the community here!

If you already have Gimp, I would suggest that you start with that. It is a very good image editor, on a par with Photoshop I think, with some strengths and weaknesses when the two are compared. We have all kinds of Tutorials in the Tutorials forum, with a lot of them for Gimp. Some PS tuts can also be used in Gimp, but wait until you have a good idea of what Gimp can do before you dive into those. I would suggest looking through the tuits for styles that you like and try some of them out. Don't look at your tut as THE WAY to map, but rather A way to create a map, and try more than one in order to develop your own style. Once you start, post it up in the WIPs (Work In Progress forums) for help, comments and critiques. Don't worry, we are a friendly bunch of cocoanuts and love helping to create nice maps. Just remember, it will be your map, so look at the c&c as suggestions

Welcome aboard. I second what Korash stated. GIMP is indeed a good editor. I started with that myself having no knowledge of digital tools but be prepared to stick with it. There is so much it can do you may start to feel overwhelmed. Today I use Photoshop and petty much all the things I learned using GIMP carried right over.

Anyway, have fun and we will watch for you in the halls.

I am somewhat confident in working with layers etc. in GIMP (I used to have a *ahem* version of PS until I saw the error of my schoolboy ways) so that could be the way forward. I know the tools are what you make of them but does something like CC3 aid the process much? I have some CAD experience (though not much) so it isn't completely foreign to me, I obviously just need to figure out what works for me!

If you are familiar with GIMP and PS and want to move up to something more professional, I would think the PS cloud version would be right for you.

CC3 is much more of a 'Symbol Drop' type program than a full CAD, where Gimp and Photoshop are more of the build from scratch type. Don't get me wrong, you can create great maps using CC3, even develop your own style, but the methods are much different. Yes you can use CC3 in your work flow, but usually as your main creation method, and then post-creation tweek things in Gimp or PS. Or use Gimp for the whole thing

If I am wrong here I am sure others will correct me because what I mentioned is NOT my work flow. Been quite a while since I played with CC.
