Post What a wonderful resource this is.

    Hi,

I'm new here, even if older than dirt.

I've always loved maps, starting in grade school. I used to make up maps from the crinkle pattern on the formica desktops at school. I fantasize terrain from melting piles of snow.

And dagnabit, I don't need another hobby!

But I'm currently working on a massive fantasy novel (currently 300K words and climbing like an F-15 on full afterburner), which requires a massive (or is that massif? …) map.

My younger son told me about this site, which is how I found GIMP, and the tutorials on how to use it.

May the spirit of Erwin Raisz be with you all.

Hi triarius, welcome to the Guild! I think you found the right place to find helpful tips & tricks for working with gimp, or just digging the archives for years. As a pretty new member myself i'm still scratching at the surface but it's so nice to discover and learn something new everytime around ... Looking forward to see this massive map for your novel.

I saw you were online, Chick, and knowing you always respond to these I didn't want to post and rob you of the first response.

    Also, welcome Triarius.

    Thank you all.

Chick, I got your e-mail. As I have not made five posts yet, I guess I'm not allowed to e-mail back, so I'll answer your inquiry here:

The map is mostly complete in sketch form, though I'm still tweaking the geology, and I'm currently working on RobA's tutorials to convert it into something more extensive and better looking in GIMP. Here's a small, slightly older version:

Hahaha, that's nice of you, but being first isn't important to me.
I just remember how I was made to feel welcome, so I try to do the same for others

No worries, I was just curious, but you can always email directly, you don't have to go through CG

welcome to the site. For a first time publishing keep your book to under 300 pages. It is hard enough to get any book published but anything above 300 for an unknown author is next to impossible.

Good luck. I look forward to seeing your maps.

Never tell me the odds …

At this size, it's going to be at least a trilogy.

    Ok, Han Solo.

Besides, publishing isn't what is important, the writing is. So just enjoy the process and good luck.

Oh, that is a nice sketch. I look forward to seeing what you do with it. What kind of a story are you writing? (Just curious - feel free to keep secrets.)
