Wip Joining the bandwagon -- MiddleEarth

    might as well join in

a test run of a few things to make a DEM

by no means near final , just a quick project to help PROCRASTINATE working on the map of the planet Mercury
    a 15.8 Gig map 92,160 x 46,080 pixels

I think it is safe to say that we all have seen the black map with red lettering in the back of LOR
    -- this map

using this as a base for masks for mixing the few different types of artificial data
    a distance transform ( 32 bit Float)
    a plasma noise
and direct filter on the mountains ( overlapping circle paint - Gmic "circle abstraction [ 32 bit float]" )

then some eroding and one gets this
-- 8 bit copy of the float normalized to 1,65535

very basic 3d view in Blender

close up on Mordor and MT. Doom

    update

new mesh ( displacement from a DEM)
and a quick water-coloring of the base map as a texture ( an idea , debating a watercolor or photorealistic )

I feel a certain pride that I sort of inspired this little trend; the more Tolkien the better.

3D makes a nice change. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses, Johnvanvliet.

the base image is coming along .Still a few areas that need work
Then on to the labels ??? text on top ? or 3d rendered fonts ?
-- rendering of the heightmap with the color map

for some views i am thinking of 3d floating names ( think the Sci Fi show - Fringe )
