Default June / July '15 Lite Challenge: The November Crisis

I guess this is kind of a placeholder for now, but here's the gist of what I'm heading for...

In a world parallel to ours, an unprecedentedly large Coronal Mass Ejection was ejected from the Sun. It travelled hundreds of millions of kilometres across the depths of space, and on the 1st of November, impacted against the magnetosphere, causing immense damage to electrical transmissions and satellites, and the massive worldwide failure of national power grids. As the month of November unfolded, the world ground to a halt...

This world is a harsher version of ours; it doesn't share the same shape, but the technology and history are somewhat similar. I plan to show the effects of multiple disasters that occurred during the November Crisis, such as nuclear meltdowns, climate barrier failures, coups, dam failures (whoops, I wrote "damn failures"...that would be appropriate though ) and many other horrible things that I intend to inflict upon the people of this world. Hmm.

    This should be fun.

Sounds like the old TV show Dark Angel.

Well, I've worked out the shape of the continents I want to focus on.
I intend to make a geopolitical map with basic relief shading, but first I need to learn how to do the shading Nearly all of this research so far has been utterly useless, so I suspect it's going to be time for some digging through some old sources...heheh.

I present to you, the poor man's screenshot:

Well, you're off to a good start! The land masses look good and it'll be interesting to see you fill them out.
