Wip WIP - Mutant Chronicles - Mars

I've started to draw Mars in the Mutant Chronicles setting. Mars is terraformed and huge canals irrigate the northern hemisphere. Capitol dominate the world and several landmarks will be added later. I think I shall use some small descriptive icons (like the pipeline) to clarify the landmarks. Do anyone have some advice how to draw polar/ice?

The textures I use to far is some kind of high-res leather texture, and a real vague mars texture. I will make it more red later, but it's kinda hypnotic to the eyes to work with that.

    remap into polar projection
    for the northpole and southpole
    add a cap

here are the real mars Northpole and Southpole ice caps
    North

    South

gimp has a nice Distort filter
that remaps a Simple Cylindrical 2 x 1 proportion (ie. 8192x4096) to polar stereographic
used that on the above 23,040 x 11,520 map and cropped

( 2048x1024 resize of the Simple Cylindrical map)

-- this is close to the real color of mars --

    Thanks Johnvanvliet!

I think I got exactly the right feel for the Mars map now, changing the color and making the pencil more vague/smooth.

Yep, colors are fine. What's the more orange/red zone at the equator?

Thanks Ilanthar! It's the "Great Rust Desert". I'm probably going to label some of the landmarks later in the process.

Fantastic and useful projections. What misteries are hidden there?

Another update! I still need to add a border and eventually some minor stuff.

Getting slowly there. Left to do is the border. The asteroids on the left and right are Phobos and Deimos, and I will add them into the border later.

Man, your series of Mutant Chronicles maps is getting better and better. Great work so far. Great idea with the asteroids in the border
