Default Global 30m Earth DEM data to be released.

News in that the 30m shuttle radar data for earth is going to be released for the whole earth. Right now you can only get it for USA with rest of world at 90m. It will be phased release over next 12 month. Good news for anyone doing local area 3D terrain.

Note that you can get 50m data for UK from Ordnance Survey as well. The NASA usage license is less restrictive than OS so for UK members this would be an increase in res and freedom of use.

That is cool. I'll need to pick your brain on how to use that in Photoshop, Blender, and Autodesk Civil.

    what dataset ?
the GMTED2010 Global Grids are in esri format and will need the use of ArcGIS or GDAL

    or the strm 2.1
    http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/
-- these have many different formats
the dem and hdr and jpg are likely of interest for the strm30
the rest uses .hgt so GDAL is needed
