Well, it's been a while and there's been no comment, so I've moved onto the next phase. I zoomed in the map a bit more and am going to start on something that looks a bit nicer. I haven't decided how I'll mark mountains and other things like that, but I think I've got a good look for the base. Though I'm not sure if I should go with a cloud effect over it or not.

Are those lines, within the land mass and looking exactly as the coastline, political borders?

As for the "with cloud effect" / "without" - I normally go for Without. But, my advice a this point would be to pick a real map and choose to replicate its style to a degree.

Yeah the lines within the landmass are meant to be political borders.
