A bit dark indeed, but with something very appealing. Nice job!

Thanks, Ilanthar. I rather like darker coloured maps.

Nice work. For trying out a new style I'd say you definitely achieved your goal. I really like the ink-soaked effect you've applied to the labels, it looks really authentic. As for criticism, I agree with Max that the piece is a little dark, especially the land. That said, this may in fact be a feature which adds to the "authenticity" of the piece, supposing that you were modeling this on examples of old faded maps. Also, the parchment texture seems just a tad too bold. I think lowering the opacity of this texture by 25% or so might help. Overall nice work though.

    Really nice work ChickPea.
I don't mind that it's dark. You could make it pop a lot with some highlighting on the sun side of the mountains.
I also think you might have more 'page' there than you need for the map itself. Gives you maybe too much negative space.

That being said, I like your font choices and don't mind the size. The map is large enough to be able to read them.
You're progressing well ChickPea. This is a very attractive map.

Thanks for the feedback, Arsheesh. I appreciate your insights. I've been looking at a lot of maps from around the 17th/18th century and I wanted to emulate those ... somewhat. This map isn't really in the style of an old map (it isn't entirely one thing or another, in truth) but it was a starting point, just to try out a couple of ideas. I have to confess that I'm rather fond of the grubby, old parchment, but then I have weird tastes!

Thanks, J, I'm really glad you like it. Though my standard isn't very high, I feel it's probably the best map I've created so far.

I think you've nailed it when you said I've got too much space around the island. I wasn't happy with the positioning of the various elements in the ocean area and kept shuffling everything around into different positions but nothing felt quite right. It didn't occur to me to crop the size down, and I think that would have made a difference. It's funny how sometimes you know something's off, but you just can't quite put your finger on it...

Thanks for taking the time to give me feedback.

    Always a pleasure ChickPea.
Did you have a wip thread for this that I missed?

No, I didn't create a WIP because I wasn't entirely sure where I was going with the map. Just wanted to mess about & try some things, and see where I ended up. I did think about creating a thread when I was about finished, just to get some feedback, but I was ready to move on to other things by that stage, so there didn't seem much point. I got some anyway, though, in this thread, so it all worked out.

    Really nice old-styled map!
I wanted a really grubby parchment paper that looked like it'd been through the wars.
    You got it!
