    Default Space Maps Beginner

    Hi to all!

I'm running a RPG campaign set in a sci-fi universe I've created during the last decade, and finally I've decided (in order to better satisfy the eyes and minds of the players too) to give to this universe a map!
Unfortunately, I'm pretty new to the field of mapping (although I've been always fascinated by that, and this is the primary reason why I'm here). Of course, the first thing I've done was to look for some good tutorials and map sample. However, I'm still stuck: I'm truly a beginner, and, of course, I don't want to draw a masterpiece (also, time is against me, since the campaign will resume as soon as everybody will come back from holidays), so I suppose my only chance is to directly ask for help.
First and foremost: can someone suggest me a tutorial for beginners about space maps? (possibly, space maps involving the whole galaxy or parts of it, since the first map I wish to do is the "strategic" one)
Second: until now I used GIMP to try to draw something. Is it the right program, or do you suggest me something else?

Sorry for such "noobiness" but thanks for every answer I'll get

Hi Maiorianus. I recently did a space map here: http://www.cartographersguild.com/al...chmentid=76522

Since you can't use the private messages yet, please feel free to email me at yodercm@earthlink.net if you have any questions or would like more information about how it's done.

    Cheers,

Wonderful map! (really...I'm not saying that only because I'm a great fan of Babylon 5 XD)
Moreover, it's basically identical to the kind of map I wish to create: in my universe, mankind has explored only a relatively small part of the galaxy (almost 1/5 or 1/6 maximum), and there are three/four major Powers plus a number of non-aligned governments (exactly like in Babylon); so, your sample is more than perfect for my purposes And, indeed.....I have A LOT of questions XD
