This sort of post is very interesting. Thanks for sharing this with us. I'll look this closely. I like the cliffs and the glacier on the top.
Hey, since that other commission is still waiting for its labels I thought I might as well start with another one in the meantime (never let the time get to waste, right?). This is the sketch I received from the client:

This is what I got so far:

Nice look to the glacier, yes.

I'm liking this a lot. Your line work is really nice.

Yep, the glaciers are excellent. I also like what you do with the coasts.
Thanks! I've finished the linework for the majority of the forests and added the main swamps (largely in the tropics or in the tundra/taiga regions of the map). I'll do the hills as the last basic geographic category tomorrow, and once they've been done I'll move on to a couple more, rather special locations (a large tree sucking the land dry of life, a flower forest, a forest of brambles/spiked vines...)

And yes, I left out the tree trunks this time. Somehow they didn't feel appropriate for a map of that scale (half a world, if I'm not mistaken).

Well, made some progress since the last update.

I love the volcano plumes and the NE region with the cliff and spikes. The lave is bit too orange in my eye.
The thorns are also excellent but the big tree near it does'nt fit very well with the other elements (some shades perhaps?). Good job with the colors!
