That super soft terrain shading is gorgeous.
Another update!
Finished the shading of the mountains, and also played around a bit with terrain shading. Almost imperceptible when you zoom in, but it lends the map a certain bumpiness that I rather like. Micro-terrain is for another update.

Next up:
- forests (have been playing around quite a bit already, but nothing decent yet)
- micro-terrain squigglies and shading
- labelling
What do you think of this update?

It's looking great, Caenwyr. Every update is a big step forward.

This terrain shading is really good, aesthetically, but i'm wondering if it's physically coherent at this scale. Nonetheless your work at this point is amazing and i like it very much. Can't wait to see it finished.
That's a very good remark, Warlin, and I'm planning to work that out when I'm getting to the micro-terrain shading job. That's probably the next thing I'm gonna do.
For now I have an update for you guys with the forests (long due!), macro-shaded (but not yet micro). I hope they fit in with the rest of the map!

Looks amazing, I love the style!
Gorgeous! Why did you darkened the sea so much? I think I prefered it on the previous version.
Thanks Josiah and Ilanthar! Also, regarding the ocean colour: what you're seeing is in fact just a vignette on the entire image. This is a temporary solution to give the map a quick-and-dirty feeling of depth without (for the moment) investing to much time in framing effects. The plan is to finetune all that as soon as I've properly framed the landmass. That will probably be covered along with, or soon after the labeling phase. But first the last terrain tweaks! I will get to those this weekend.

Nice forests, great color, but I think they have the same problem as the terrain squigglies! The fluffy detail is too evenly spread out. I also think the shading makes them look flat against the ground, which I guess is scale appropriate in a way, but I like my forests with lots of volume
Yeah I'm planning to work on that. Haven't had any time this weekend so it'll still take some time, but I intend to give the forestsca nice little dropshadow and lend some shadowing to the forest squigglies as well. Update to follow as soon as I get there!
