I didn't say there was anything wrong with Gimp. But I prefer something that is the industry standard.

haha .. Industry Standard..what exactly is Industry Standard...JPG? BMP? PNG? Format is Industry Standard not a particular program. There is not anything once you learn Gimp that it can't do compared to Photoshop
and You Already heard from one of the Best Cartographers that he does not use Photoshop as his go to program

but it is loosing some market share

mostly it is using the best tool ( for you ) for the job

not every one in the world uses Microsoft
Apple is popular and so is linux and other BSD operating systems

for some people the "best" tool might be Photoshop and ArcGis
for others it might be Gimp,imagemagick or Gmic , Krita , Inkscape , Qgis

That's a very good point. But like I said, I didn't say anything was wrong with Gimp. I just said I prefer to learn on photoshop instead. Personally I don't like the way Gimp opens up multiple windows that aren't docked to each other. But that is just my preference. And I know there is a version of Gimp called Gimpshop that tries to emulate the look of Photoshop. But I have already spent a fortune on Campaign Cartographer, which by the way can use Photoshop brushes but I don't believe it can use Gimp brushes (maybe it will be able to in it's next update but who knows. I learned about its ability to do this by subscribing to their Cartographer's Annual, but it does not mention Gimp brushes at all. I've also tried to use Gimp brushes and it doesn't work, but it does for photoshop. ) so I'd like to be able to make my own brushes for it. Also, there are a ton more tutorials and accessories for photoshop than for Gimp, so to me that is always a plus.

Please don't misunderstand me or think I am putting Gimp down. I am not. I was just making a statement as to which program I prefer using going forward.

While Gimp can open a PSD (because it's really just a modification to TIFF), it does not have 100% compatibility.

In the event that you need to exchange working files with another artist, Photoshop is more common than Gimp is, in spite of the price (or perhaps because of it).

For what it's worth, Gimp 2.8 comes with a single window mode and layer groups that solve two of its biggest issues (I mention it because you said you didn't like the separate windows). That said, Photoshop is great too. If you can afford it, go for it. But it really isn't a matter of the Good one vs the Crappy open source one. It's two great programs, each of which has different strengths and weaknesses. I use both because they each can do things the other can't.
