FUN FACT in the african savanna rivers can actually dissapear underground only to resurface a few kilometers further down

This reminds me of Medicine Lake in western Canada. In the dry season it's fascinating already (a river that simply disappears beneath a hill ridge), but when the snows start to melt, the influx of water is so high the sink hole can't take it anymore and the entire valley turns into a lake. A lake with a drain. But even at that point you can still see the drowned river bed snake beneath the waters, a fascinating place!

Google Maps illustrates this magnificently (although a bit quirky). The upper half is a satellite picture taken in spring/summer, the lower half is late fall probably.
