May/June 2016 Lite Challenge Entry: South Austrea

Im not sure if this is weird to do, but this is my first post! I have been drawing maps since I was a kid, and wanted to learn a bit more for my own maps. Practicing with the contest briefs and learning from the awesome mappers here has been super fun.

Onto the actual map; I decided to do just an outlined style. If I have time I might try a simple colour one, but I don't have much experience with it. I tend to only put a city illustration at the bottom of most of my maps, so i'm not sure if I should do another illustration. I feel it might get a bit crowded with more. This is my first time doing a proper isometric looking map, I normally just do straight down, but I drew the crater before anything else and does not look as interesting flat. The border/legend is my bane right now, don't know what i'm doing there.

For this first one I will leave the under sketch visible so people have an idea of where things are going, so some parts do look a bit more messy.

Thanks everyone! Small update, leaving out the sketch on this one. Still unsure about the border/legend. Not sure if I should add smoke to the volcano either, any suggestions would be awesome.

Hey fellow Scot, welcome to the challenge and the Guild.

This is looking fab so far. I really like the crater and the illustration, and the forests look great too. Too bad you probably aren't colouring it, as I think I'd like to have seen it with some colour, but it makes sense that a book map would be black & white only. But fantastic start, and look forward to seeing more.

I do have one question... the area south/southeast of the end of your mountain range... are those lakes and rivers? Perhaps you could add a little something so it's easy to recognize them as lakes? That is if they are, indeed, lakes! lol It's just a little hard for me to tell right now
