But are those maps true? Only way to find out...Grab a Rucksack..a Couple of friends and head out to explore.

I don't think most of us use maps for playing board games, so best not to assume prior knowledge of these things.

I make sandbox style maps all the time for my D&D campaign. Using hexes (hexographer program) to give myself leeway on the terrain (i.e if I need a small forest, I can say one is there without hush). I use three different scales: 6 miles per hex, 24 miles per hex and 120 miles per hex. I make the continent in 120 miles per hex, zoom in the "campaign area" at 24 miles per hex and zoom in the "Relevant" areas of campaign arcs at 6 miles per hex.

And then cause I like doing this stuff, I zoom in other places just because I like it without expecting my campaign to head there, but that's beyond what you asked.

AS OF RANDOM GENERATORS: I am going to make a thread about them. I haven't found one that I liked... till I made one. Although the one I made doesn't use procedural generation algorithms, but unconstrained simulation methods.
And of course, every random map needs a bit of work afterwards.
